Defects in the jaw can be caused by periodontal disease, wearing dentures, tooth loss, injury, or trauma. This defect can cause problems with placing dental implants and can even mar the appearance of your jaw near the missing teeth. The defects make your ridge too thin or too short. If you have deformities in your upper or lower jaw, Dr. Kamy Noruzi may recommend ridge augmentation in Geneva, Illinois.
Our periodontist will move the gums away from the ridge to expose the defect in the bone. The area is filled with a bone graft, which can be your own bone, cadaver bone, or a cow bone, to build it up to the ridge. This will increase the ridge height and/or width. The gums are stitched back into place and you will be sent home to recover. Depending on your individual case, your bone will be allowed to heal and develop for four to twelve months before dental implants are placed. In some cases, our periodontist will place the dental implants right after performing ridge augmentation.
Ridge augmentation will improve your appearance and allow for successful dental implants that will last for many years. We welcome you to contact Fox River Periodontics, PC today to learn more and to schedule your next appointment.
